Frensham pond awarded 'Excellent' water quality rating

Surrey's hidden gem has been awarded an "excellent" rating by the Environment Agency for its water quality. The announcement has been received positively by the Waverley Borough Council, they have however also expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of excessive usage, particularly during hot weather, on the ecological significance of the area. The council advises visitors to consider visiting the beach during off-peak seasons or explore one of the other 423 sites across the country that undergo water quality assessments by the Environment Agency.

The pond stands out as one of the few non-coastal locations recognized for its remarkable water quality. However, due to its specific ecological significance and natural habitat, the area was not designed to accommodate a substantial surge in visitors. A council spokesperson emphasized that the influx of crowds poses significant challenges, including traffic congestion and impediments for emergency vehicles.

Encompassing an expansive area of around 1,000 acres (400 hectares), the site is under the ownership of the National Trust.
